Out with the Old

Ever had that feeling of excitement while opening the anti-static bags of a hard drive?  Not many can relate, but let me tell you why I was excited.  For the last 3 weeks I’ve been playing Russian roulette with my hard drives.  I’ve been running my RAID 1 setup with only one working hard drive.  As a fashion photographer the  pics on these drives were mostly client work so when my new hard drives arrived a sense of relief was felt.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a quick piece about one of my Seagate hard drives in my RAID 1 array has failed, be sure to check it out to get the background of my story.  After some research, some shopping and with a little help from the backblaze.com quarterly report on their hard drives I decided to make the switch back to Western Digital.  Personally I’ve had a good running with Western Digital green drives, however now that I’m running a RAID 1 array I decided to give their red drives a try.  I decided to replace my old Seagate 3TBs with Western Digital’s Red in 4TBs.

It took about 5 hours to transfer the data over to the new drives.  When I saw the green online status in the Disk Utility I was happy know that my data is “safe” sort of speak for the next 3 years, if I’m lucky with the hard drive gods.

Now what to do with that failed Seagate drive?  Think I’ll take the hard drive to an empty field and let it know how I feel about its failed offline status by giving it an Office Space style beat down with some Geto Boyz jamming in the background.  Sounds familiar?  Maybe.
