Social media has played a large part of my marketing and brand. Its has given me a channel to share my work and reach out to audiences literally across the globe.
Every week there seems to be a new social media app or platform to keep us entertained or in touch with the masses. When I first heard of Snapchat 3 years ago I thought it was the lamest thing out. How do I engage with my audience in 10 seconds or less?!
What has social media come to? Facebook with its newsfeed algorithm, Twitter with its 140 character limit tweets and Vine with its 6 second video. Its as if social media has been evolving to cater an audience with Attention Deficit Disorder. But that’s not the point of this blog post. I digress.
Snapchat was a hard social media app to work with prior to October 2013. At that time you only had 10 seconds to share/chat via pictures to your selected audience and that was it. No replays or do overs. Its either they saw it and was able to digest the information or not. Then a new feature “My Story” was introduced to Snapchat. It gave the ability to share your snaps to anyone with unlimited views for a period of 24 hours.
I’ve found that with the “My Story” I’m able to give a behind the scenes point of view of being a fashion and beauty photographer. It has also allowed me to “curate” cool snaps of random things that catch my eye, for example, architecture or landscapes. From time to time if I come across something neat that I want to share I’ll take a couple of snaps and share it to my story. On occasion I’ll snap about my personal and social life. Now that’s something different than the norm from me cause I tend to not share too much of that side of me, but I figured why not and get a little social with this app.
So if you happen to be on Shapchat add me on there! Look me up under rodneyalan. If you do send me a message to, would love to hear from you! If you’ve been on the fence about Snapchat, I think you’ll have fun with this app because there’s more to it than just sexting nudes to your friends.
