Same song

Same Old Song

Same song

Let’s get uncomfortable and create something magical.

I’ve always been a fan of the 90’s hip hop and rap because well that’s what I grew up listening to it.  The music of the 90’s felt like  it was fresh and always new.  The hip hop and rap of today sounds like the same old song over and over.  At least to me.  The songs use the same format… cars, money and girls.  Fuck!  I want to hear something different, tell me about your peanut butter, jelly and banana sandwich?!  Who wants to listen to the same old song or even see the same thing on repeat.

That’s how I feel when it comes to shooting with models.  As a fashion photographer I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to work with plenty of models from new agency faces to working agency girls.  I’ve gotten to the point I can spot when a model repeats her movements or poses.  Let’s face it all models have their 5 or 10 go-to looks, poses or moves.  I like to call this their comfort zone.  Nothing is wrong with having a comfort zone, I actually advise new faces or development models to have go-to poses so that can have something to go back to.  You know like “blue steel” haha.  But I digress.  I get it, one has to have their go-to poses/movements, but when I have seen those same looks in a model’s book and all of their pics on the inter-webs I want something different.

When it comes to testing I don’t want the same thing that a model has given the last 50 photographers.  I want something new and exciting.  The only way to get to that is to step out of the comfort zone and push to new levels.  And that is when something magical is created (see picture above).  This holds true to all creatives even myself, but today this is for the models.

So if we get the opportunity to test or collaborate I want you to bring it.  Show me what you got.  This is not the time to be shy.  I want you to be fearless and don’t hold back.  Throw away all those inhibitions and just let yourself go!

Think about it when you’ve done something new or different for the first time.  It was exciting, right?  That rush or feeling that you get is what I’m talking about.  Put trust in yourself and the team, when you see the results it will make sense.  Without taking that risk of trying something new it would be the same old song.

You have to risk it to get the biscuit.  And that’s when the magic happens.

Lets shoot!  Holler 🙂
